The developers of the affordable luxury apartments at Silver Spring needed
a design strategy that could blend centerpiece features and subtle touches of
comfort with the aesthetic of the structure’s original, historically landmarked 1927
laundry building.
RND looked to the building’s center space—the lobby and mezzanine areas—to
create a uniquely engaging luxury environment with sumptuous Turkish marble
flooring beneath a second story catwalk lined with custom handrails cast in the
French fer forgé style. From above and below, the chandelier, custom designed
and made by Daniel Berglund Lighting, gives a sense of free elegance and draws
residents towards the RND-designed gym, with its bright, clean lines and one-of-
a-kind golf simulator room bearing Pierre Charreau-inspired motifs etched onto
glass walls.
In the apartments, amply lit interiors, floors patterned with the coloring of natural
wood, and kitchens complete with granite countertops and tiled backsplash,
hardwood cabinetry and stainless steel appliances evoke a light, modern
aesthetic crafted to stay within the bounds of the developer’s carefully calibrated
budget for the building’s 210 units.
Calm, tasteful fixtures illuminate the smooth lines and sapling tones of the
building’s corridors as wood species, marble and hewn stone extend the design
outdoors to the building’s poolside space. A residents lounge with custom
designed furniture upholstered by French maison Nobilis, artwork hand picked
from the Paris flea market, classic wood sideboards and calm, American
Colonial-inspired custom lighting round out one of the region’s most striking and
livable spaces.
